Dead – finding more than remains

A U.S. bomber soared into the air over Kunming, China, January 25, 1944 headed to India.  It never arrived, for whatever reason; it crashed on a mountain in the dreaded Hump—the Himalayas.  No one searched for it since no idea existed where it crashed.

In 2006 a hiker in northeast India spotted the plane’s ruins.  In 2007 the family of one crew member learned that the wreckage had been found.  In 2008 the Defense Department confirmed the find.  In 2015—yes, all those years later—a team got to the site and found the remains of only that one crewman.  The other seven weren’t found.  His remains were returned in June, 2017 for burial.  San Diego U-T, 6/11/17

In that vast wilderness eight young men met a violent, fiery end.  Alone except for God.  No one knowing.  If caring, no one searched.  From small American towns or large cities.  Casualties of war.  And whose remains alone were found and returned.  Remains:  the leftover of life.

Thank God that, wherever the remains of the dead lie, in whatever condition, however deprived of identifying marks…THAT is NOT the END.  God won’t be transporting human remains into his Presence at the Shout of Christ and the Last Trumpet blast across the universe.

Out of graves everywhere the remains of believers will rise to be re-clothed in flesh-and-bone-bodies, every mark of personhood identified, every trait of personality refined and perfected.  And in once-mortal bodies turned immortal; in once perishable bodies turned imperishable by the eternal Christ, we shall live forever and ever, world without end.  Amen.  Amen!

Future – when hope exists, Part I

The following two blogs originated in a graveside service the writer conducted.  It was the last of 4 funerals our congregation had in a few months’ time, the last three within two weeks.

II Corinthians 4:16-5:1 offers the reason Christians must live for tomorrow.  There’s always enough sorrow in life to eclipse our joy, if we let sorrow dominate.  OR…there’s always more than enough Joy than sorrow can ever eclipse, if we let Jesus fill us with himself and his promises.

The apostle confronted that dilemma as he wrote the above text.  He understood the problem of humanity:  “outwardly we are wasting away.”  The four loved ones we lost experienced that wasting.  Of the quartet only one death shocked us by its suddenness.  We watched the other three vanish in stages—one lady slipped away in a worship service, only to rally for a few more weeks.

Like them, all of us waste away:  bodily, mentally, emotionally…until we go the way of all the earth.  We’re either now tired or weary or exhausted, or, like my brother Rich a few days before he died, “WORN OUT.”  If not now, later.  If not immediately, eventually.

Death…the human condition that interrupts relationships, cancels friendships, ends marriages, blasts retirement plans and mocks all the improvements in diet, health, exercise and medical care to significantly lengthen lifespans.

Yet…appreciate that little conjunction…though all I’ve written is true…       –  End Part I –

Intelligence – not equal to wisdom

A woman famous for answering questions from every corner of life, found herself cornered when someone asked what religion she considered correct.  She replied that she could “never answer” that question.  Parade Magazine, 12/25/16, p. 8

The one question all humanity needs to face and answer because everyone who lives dies and confronts God Almighty—and she had no answer?  Didn’t she have at least an opinion?  Or is she like so many people who consider themselves their own deity?  Has she already determined what will happen to her after death, whatever God thinks?

God has no mercy on anyone being his own deity.  Or anyone who wills to live as he pleases, according to his own dictates.  Or anyone who thinks one world at a time is all we can handle.  If another world exists after this one, we’ll have to face it when it comes.  Who comfort themselves with the illusion of endless second chances—called reincarnation—until they finally “get it right”—whatever it is that the fates determine is right.

Our sure mortality imposes the person of God on us, whether we stay within Biblical boundaries or try to make our own way after death.  We can will ourselves to live outside God’s word—as a man’s obituary recently noted he had.  No rules for him except as he made them, how he decided they applied to him and what limitations they imposed on him.  San Diego U-T, 12/18/16

No greater fool lives than the “self-made” man, making his own rules for living.  Who pretends that no nexus occurs between a life with choices and a future life determined by our present choices.  It’s just live, die and go on to “heaven”, wherever that is, whether it’s a nameless nirvana no one can speculate, or the obliteration that all animals face, since all humans are, after all, only animals.

Intelligence is never the equal of wisdom.  Psalm 14:1 leaves no doubt that to disbelieve in God makes one a fool—an empty-head.  Proverbs 1:7, 2:5-10, 3:5-7, I Corinthians 1:18-2:16 reveal God’s response to people who rely on their intelligence, not God’s word.  That leads people to study everything in life except God, because they consider God unknowable or irrelevant.

Yours for a life that reads God’s Word as absolute truth.  That listens carefully as we read so the Holy Spirit can teach us.  That responds by saying, “What God says, I believe, whoever disagrees.  For whatever he says is true, whatever opinion we may have.”

Death – inevitable for all

In Psalm 90:3 Moses wrote that God turns “men back to dust.”  In 90:5 “You sweep men away in the sleep of death.”  In 90:9b, “we finish our years with a moan.”  Bleached bones and full graveyards previous to Moses verified his words.  Since we don’t leave corpses to rot, we fill cemeteries world-wide with dead bodies.  But no one ever defies God’s threat in Genesis 2:17, “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

How comforting to know that researchers in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine have agreed with God and Moses.  Unwittingly, of course; and conditionally, of course.  They admit that a limit exists to our life span, unless a “breakthrough” occurs to conquer the aging process.  Their studies in a “global database” prove that no such breakthrough is at hand or in prospect.  While women during childbirth live longer, and children with better pre-natal care and dietary improvements live longer, nothing keeps the aged from passing.  San Diego U-T, 10/6/16

True, a few people world-wide live beyond 100, some to the 120’s.  A few.  A miniscule number compared to the pre-Flood characteristic age of 800-900 YEARS.  And equally small compared to the Post-Flood characteristic age 200-400 YEARS.

We didn’t need a study to prove we can’t live without dying, but scientists and researchers love to create studies to prove they CAN DO research.  Meaningless, yes.  Unprofitable, yes.  But it satisfies them and think it somehow impresses us.

Right now, on this very day, cemeteries world-wide will find hearses carrying in bodies.  None will carry out living, resurrected people.  Hearts will break from those leaving the dead behind.  (In reality, they leave only the body behind. The spirit in the body has departed, leaving the living behind.)  Nevertheless, ongoing death proves the truth of God’s word and mocks the pretensions that humanity COULD, SOMEHOW, reverse it.

Better for us to read God’s Word, to believe in God’s Son, so we can defy eternal death by rising from the dust in new bodies when Jesus Christ calls everything alive in his Return.
